In fifth grade, we will be learning to live the Beatitudes through prayer and works of service. One of our service projects is collecting items for
St. Elizabeth Coleman.
Leader In Me
Nativity is proud to be a Leader In Me School. We learn about the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Students, and learn to put those habits into practice each and every day; in the classroom, with classmates, teachers, and visitors. Even at this age, it is exciting to see them take charge of their choices and actions. They learn that they can create and own their attitude, choice, and consequences. Students see how their choices affect others around them. Learning respect and taking responsibility for their choices and actions, not only makes for a stronger character but Christ-like character.
Language Arts
Within our language arts curriculum, we focus on comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, literature analysis, oral reading fluency, and the connection between reading and writing. The students work in literature circles, guided reading groups, and small group settings. Some activities include: variety of writing opportunities, study of words through vocabulary and spelling, exploring and enriching the understanding of the parts of speech, daily reading and response time, and read-aloud that emphasize higher-level thinking skills.
Social Studies
Throughout six units of studies, the students will learn about native people of North America, exploration and colonization, colonial America, the struggle for North America, the new nation, slavery and emancipation, and life in the United States. Within these units, the students will explore the content through projects, reading historical fiction and non-fiction, and working together in groups.
Math
In fifth grade we study number sense and computation (multiplication and division of whole numbers, comparing fractions and decimals, addition and subtraction of fractions and decimals), algebra and functions (variables and coordinate grids), geometry and measurement (polygons, shapes, and solids), problem solving, reasoning and proof, communicating about math and thinking.
Science
Through reading and experimenting with hands-on activities, the students take a closer look in to scientific inquiry. They use their reading and math skills to help them with many science concepts. We also participate in the science fair in the fifth grade. Students explore the scientific method as they approach their experiments and learn how to question their work.
Visual Arts
Fifth-grade students at Nativity explore the elements and principles of art such as color, line, shape, form, space, and add value and form as part of their visual arts education. An artistic exploration of these elements and principles is chosen to be appropriate for their age and expands on the skills they have already learned. Fifth graders learn basic figure drawing, advanced color knowledge, and appreciation of famous artists who have influenced the world of art. Most importantly, students continue to develop a personal artistic style that expresses their inner experiences.
Spanish
Spanish class provides the students the opportunity to learn a different language and culture. Students will work on writing and speaking basic words and phrases. They will extend their Spanish vocabulary to include numbers, colors, greetings, emotions, months, days of the week, weather, family members, actions, common foods, and animals. Students extend their knowledge of Spanish learning songs and saying a prayer every morning. Students are introduced to the traditional celebrations of El Dia de Muertos, 5 de Mayo, and Los Posadas.
Field Trips
Throughout the year we will be taking trips to enhance our learning. We make a trip to Junior Achievement’s Biztown to learn more about economics. This experience cements the new concepts for the students as well as gives them a chance to practice and see things first hand. We take trips to see theatrical performances at Roncalli High School and visit the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
Religion
We spend the year learning about our faith and discussing ways to show we are Christians. This is a time when the children are growing spiritually and we stress the importance of having Jesus as a best friend. We also spend some time learning about family life and God’s plan for married and single people.
Technology
Our use of technology in the fifth grade will include: developing proper finger placement while typing, IXL Math Program; Accelerated Reader Program, guided online research and activities, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, and integration of technology in to subject areas.
Music
Music provides our fifth-grade students with an opportunity to explore rhythm, melody, and harmony with song, movement, and games. We continue to
expand our vocal and instrumental experiences, including African and Latin drumming, and ballroom dancing as well as an increase in complexity that has been learned before. Fifth-grade students have the opportunity to sing in our 4th & 5th grade choir, play in our 5th grade recorder choir, and play in our beginning band. Each organization provides opportunities to perform several times throughout the school year. We endeavor to implant a life-long love of music through all types of hands-on experiences. Our fifth-grade students participate in one of two major concerts each year.
Physical Education
Fifth-grade physical education standards are incorporated into games and activities. Special emphasis is placed on team-work and cooperation. Activities are designed to build on basic skills developed in the primary grades!!
